To wind up the France-Russia year, the Bolshoi Theatre, in association with Paris National Opera, is presenting its audiences with the WORLD PREMIERE of the opera The Cherry Orchard. And it is introducing a new name to the Russian public - that of composer Philippe Fenelon.

A PRESS CONFERENCE on the forthcoming live relay of the opera WOZZECK will take place in the atrium of the Bolshoi Theatre Auxiliary Building, starting at 2 p. m.

Not Russian classical opera of the 19th century but, on the contrary, a Western 20th century avant-garde work (already however a classic) in a Bolshoi Theatre production is to be transmitted live by Mezzo, the popular French TV channel devoted to classical music, opera, ballet, jazz and world music. “Listen, Look, Dare” is Mezzo’s slogan. And in producing Alan Berg’s opera Wozzeck, the Bolshoi has demonstrated that this is an attitude it fully supports. The live broadcast of this opera (conductor Teodor Currentzis, director Dmitri Tcherniakov) from the Bolshoi will be on 26 November 2010, at 5 p.m. Paris time.

There can be no better confirmation of the Bolshoi’s total integration into the world opera, dance and festival space, than its first two premieres of the present season. Both — the recent ballet and approaching opera first night — are the result of collaboration with world-famous companies and both have a French ‘accent’, so appropriate in the Year of France in Russia and of Russia in France. (We remind readers that the ballet season kicked off with a piece by the well-known choreographer Anjelin Preljocaj And Then, One Thousand Years’ Peace, uniting Bolshoi Ballet dancers and dancers from his own Company, based in Aix-en-Provence). Don Giovanni, which opens this season’s series of opera premieres also ‘comes’ from Aix-en-Provence. It is a co-production of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Festival international d’art lyrique d’ Aix-en-Provence, Teatro Real, Madrid and the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto.
