 January, 12 "Swan Lake" performance on the Historical stage was dedicated to the anniversary of its first staging. The most popular ballet of all times, which has been created specifically for The Bolshoi and then took over the world, turned 140 years!Though this ballet as a choreographic masterpiece made it into history with a staging by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, but for the very first time it has been staged at The Bolshoi, for which Pyotr Tchaikovsky created his famous score. The premiere took place on February 20 (March 4) in 1877. The first "Swan Lake" has been choreographed by Václav Reisinger, Polina Karpakova was the first Odette/Odile.

 November, 20, to celebrate Maya Plisetskaya's 91st anniversary, a monument of legendary ballerina has been opened in Moscow!Sculptor Victor Mitroshin knew his model very well and had re-created her in bronze several times. This time he used help from Rodion Schedrin, Maya's husband and composer of many beautiful ballets, including "Carmen Suite" in which she created one of her favourite parts - this image was used for the statue.

For Anna Netrebko this will also become her debut in The Bolshoi performance. This ballet that can only be seen at the Bolshoi has everything to it: mad rhythms, vigorous chase scenes, and decadent cabaret numbers. With its passionate love story featuring beautiful duets between Boris and Rita, the Bolshoi dancers plunge into every stylized step and gesture magnificently.

 September, 16 Teatro alla Scala tour at The Bolshoi as part of "Cherry Forest" Open Arts Festival will come to an end with �Simon Boccanegra' opera live stream at Teatralnaya square.The interest to the legendary Italian theatre's performances in Moscow is so huge, that even The Bolshoi Historical stage couldn't contain everybody. GUM - The Bolshoi's new and privileged partner - and "Cherry Forest" Open Arts Festival came forward with an initiative to broadcast a live stream of a closing performance on special screens in front of the Historical building. The Bolshoi and Teatro alla Scala administration strongly supported the idea.

Kulchinskaya took the 3rd prize and Volkov took the 2nd.Operalia, The World Opera Competition, was founded in 1993 by Plácido Domingo to discover and help launch the careers of the most promising young opera singers of today. His goal is to attract singers of all voice tessituras and from every country in the world ranging from 18 to 32 years of age, to have them audition and be heard by a panel of distinguished international opera personalities, in the most prestigious and competitive showcase in the world. Each year, the Competition receives close to 1,000 applications.

Tonight the Hamburg Ballet starts the series of "Peer Gynt" ballet performances on the Historical stage!John Neumeier's staging premiered in 1989 - the ballet has been recognized as one of the masterpieces took its place in Hamburg Ballet theatre. It has been performed in Moscow a year after that. Summer 2015 Neumeier created the second version of his "Peer Gynt" and now, half a year later The Bolshoi welcomes the famous Hamburg Company with this ballet on the Historical stage!

October, 28 "Iolanta" opera by Pyotr Tchaikovsky premiered on the Historical stage. For the first time at The Bolshoi the opera will be presented together with its �lost twin' Nutcracker though, true, in the form of the Symphonic Suite rather than the two-act ballet. But, for all that, Tchaikovsky's idea of uniting the two works into a single production, rather than simply presenting them as a double bill on the same evening, will be realized. Maestro Anton Grishanin conducted the staging by Sergei Zhenovach, and Alexander Borovsky was in charge of set design.The main parts on the premiere night have been performed by Ekaterina Morozova (Iolanta), Oleg Dolgov (Vaudemont), Vyacheslav Pochapsky (King Rene), Igor Golovatenko (Robert) and Elchin Azizov (Ibn-Hakia).

 During 140 years of on-stage existence the legendary "Carmen" opera by Bizet passed through an enormous variety of evocations and interpretations. The stage director Alexei Borodin and his permanent collaborator scene designer Stanislav Benediktov will present their version at The Bolshoi. Famous Spanish dancers and choreographers Rosario and Ricardo Castro create the authentic dances.  From April 22 "Georgy Yakulov. Master of multicolored suns" exhibition dedicated to famous theatre artist will be open at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Great master designed scenery just for one performance at The Bolshoi, but certainly for a unique one. "La belle Hélène" operetta by Jacques Offenbach premiered on the theatre's stage. Yakulov created the one and only "play device" in The Bolshoi history: the playground with steep spiral staircases with the characters in grotesque bright costumes getting up and down has been running dynamically on an axis.You can see the sketches for this scenery at the exhibition presented by the Bolshoi museum.

This year great opera singer has a double jubilee: on 27th February she celebrated her 80th birthday and now is going to mark the 60th anniversary of her professional career.Bogdan Volkov will sing Lensky's aria "Where, oh where did you go off to?", from Eugene Onegin, and Alexander Kireyev - Yeletsky's aria I love you, from The Queen of Spades.  From 20 till 29 March The Bolshoi Opera and Ballet companies will take part in annual Hong Kong Arts Festival.This is not the first time The Bolshoi visits this event - in 2002 it presented "Boris Godunov" and "The Love of the Three Oranges" in Hong Kong. This time, thirteen years later, we are presenting both our Opera Company, in the recently renovated �golden treasury' production "The Tsar's Bride", as well as our Ballet Company - in two 20th century masterpieces: Balanchine's neoclassical "Jewels" and Alexei Ratmansky's rediscovered and revised version of "The Flames of Paris".

The Bolshoi virtual project obviously couldn't get along without paying attention to the person who was the initiator of the theatre's museum creation. "Fyodor Fedorovsky. The Bolshoi Theatre legend" exhibition is dedicated to an outstanding theatre artist.After the Revolution in 1917 he became an artist and then the head of the whole backstage staff at The Bolshoi. And he worked there till his last days. First of all he designed sceneries for numerous gorgeous opera stagings - "Sadko", "Prince Igor", "Khovanshchina", "Boris Godunov", "The Tsar's Bride". But he also created theatre art ateliers which are still functioning.

Tonight "The Queen of Spades" opera premieres on the Historical stage.The story of passion and madness told by Alexander Pushkin got its new sound 17 years ago with Lev Dodin's direction for Opéra national de Paris. Since then the staging had success on different European stages and finally made it to The Bolshoi. The director promises that rather than simply repeating the Paris version, the Moscow one will be given a new lease of life.

In autumn 2014 The Bolshoi Museum and the Russian museum of Ethnography (Saint Petersburg) made a successful exhibition in Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK). The project showed and told the history of Russian national costume and its stage evocation. Now any web-user all over the world can see this unique collection.The Bolshoi Museum contains more than 3000 costumes, about half of which were used in productions based on Russian folklore. The most interesting and original items have been included into exhibition. The Bolshoi Museum presents photos of the scenes and set design sketches as well, so you could imagine the costumes in context of the performances.

 "Baroque. Journey" festival is continued at The Bolshoi. The first concerts introduced Italy and France and today the audience will take a musical walk around England where Baroque epoch have been presented by one of the greatest composers of 18th century - Georg Friedrich Händel. The concert program is kind of an anthology of composer's opera art. Almost all of the pieces will be performed at The Bolshoi for the first time. Not only fragments from currently popular operas by "great Saxon" like "Alcina", "Giulio Cesare in Egitto", or "Rinaldo" will be included to the set list, but some less known compositions as well.

 The exhibition dedicated to P.Tchaikovsky's 175th anniversary is open now at The Bolshoi historical building Chorus Hall.The photos of scenes from performances, old posters copies, theatre programmes and pamphlets will be presented for visitors.  Last year The Bolshoi Ballet Company took part in The Northern Lights Festival which for over 25 years has been regularly held in the Arctic city of TromsГё, making the 2nd ever appearance in Norway. The tour made a huge success and this year the Festival organizers invited The Bolshoi's Opera Company.The Bolshoi Opera soloists and Young artists opera program members gave concert performances of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" opera at the Aurora Kino Fokus, the city's largest cinema-concert hall.

 We are happy to present some pictures from the opening night performance, starring the first cast.Robert Carsen, one of the most sought-after opera directors in the world, was invited to the Bolshoi to implement this project. Evelino PidГІ, the acknowledged interpreter of Italian opera repertoire, is the music director of the production. This project is actually a co-production of the famous Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and four major European opera houses - Opéra National du Rhin, Theatre La Monnaie (Belgium), Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Bolshoi Theatre. The main part was performed by the Bolshoi Theatre's guest soloist Dimitris Tiliakos. The young singer Sergey Romanovsky performed the part of the Duke. Kristina Mkhitaryan, a participant of the Bolshoi Young Artists Opera Program, performed the part of Gilda.

The idea comes from Bolshoi Theatre Prima Ballerina Svetlana Zakharova, who began her ballet education within the walls of the School.Her project has won the support of famous Kiev School of Choreography graduates (or of students for a number of years at the School as was the case with Zakharova) - Alina Cojocaru (English National Ballet), Nina Zmievets (St. Petersburg Boris Eifman Ballet Company), Leonid Sarafanov (St. Petersburg Mikhailovsky Theatre), Ivan Putrov (Great Britain). And now, 4 years later, our live broadcasts are going on in 1200 cinemas in 50 countries.

 Kristina Mkhitaryan, an artist of the Bolshoi Theatre Young Artists Opera Program, received another prestigious award; the singer won the 1st prize at the the Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition. This competition has been organized in the city of Vercelli (Italy) since 1950. The first prize is named after Joseph Robbone, a teacher of the music lyceum in Vercelli and the founder of the competition, which marks the memory of the famous composer and violinist Gian Battista Viotti, who was born in Vercelli province.

 Nina Timofeeva, a ballerina and the People's Artist of the USSR, passed awayNina Timofeeva, passed away in Israel at the age of 79. She was the brightest representative of the Bolshoi Ballet outstanding galaxy of artists in the 1960s and 1970s. Powerful acting, enchanting charisma and dramatic performance allowed the ballerina to develop her own unique style that showed brightly in various classical productions and helped her to create unforgettable characters in various ballet productions, staged in her time, mainly in productions, choreographer by Yuri Grigorovich.

 The Bolshoi Theatre Woodwind Quintet, founded one year ago, gives a concert to mark the release of its first CDThe Bolshoi Brass Quintet and the Violin Ensemble which been revived recently was founded by a group of musicians from the Bolshoi; the woodwind soloists and artists have also united their efforts and founded the Bolshoi Woodwind Quintet. The participants are: Nikolai Popov (flute) a laureate of international and all-Russian competitions, Honored Artist of Russia and all-Russian competition laureate Sergei Lysenko (oboe), the winner of the 1st prize at the N.A. In 1973 another great French - choreographer Roland Petit created "La Rose Malade" ballet with Gustav Mahler' music specially for the prima. Plisetskaya was going to perform with 6 male partners and to defy conservative Soviet society. Yves Saint Laurent was so inspired by this idea that he created incredibly feminine and at the same time revealing soft pink chiffon cape for his favourite ballerina.

 The gala concert "Opera Ball" in honor of the outstanding singer Elena Obraztsova took place at the Bolshoi Theatre on October 28thOpera stars, outstanding musicians and dancers congratulated the opera diva. Anna Netrebko, Maria Guleghina, Olga Peretyatko, Ekaterina Siurina, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, José Cura, Bruno PraticГІ and Yusif Eyvazov sang in honor of Obraztsova. The main heroine of this even prepared a surprise for the audience as well; she appeared on the stage as the Countess from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. Tchaikovsky. The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra was conducted by the famous Eugene Kohn, who worked with Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and other opera legends.

 On 20th October, the most popular Instagram-photographers will come to the Theatre. For one hour they will be looking for some interesting perspectives and taking beautiful photos in the Main Foyer, the Imperial Foyer and on the Historic stage. Then, next week the participants will upload their photos to Instagram, where you will be able to find them with the hashtag #EmptyBolshoi.The idea of an "empty" campaign was born in New York when Instagram-photographers were invited to a closed meeting at the Metropolitan museum after-hours. Participants were allowed to take photos which portrayed the famous museum from new and interesting perspectives. The project turned out to be so successful that the campaign began to spread all over the world and many companies now gladly participate in it. Russia will be represented in this project by The Bolshoi Theatre.

 The Bolshoi Museum started the exhibition in Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK) in cooperation with the Russian museum of Ethnography (Saint Petersburg). The project will show and tell the history of Russian national costume and its stage evocation.The Bolshoi Museum brought not only Russian opera and ballet costumes but also photos of the scenes and set design sketches, so the visitors could imagine the costumes in context of the performances.

Its leader - the violinist, singer, conductor and international prize-winner Dmitri Sinkovsky. Taking part in the Bolshoi Theatre concert was lutenist Luca Pianca (Italy), a pioneer of European authentic music performance and one of the founders of the famous Il Giardino Armonico Ensemble.

 The XII ceremony of presentation of the National fashion award "Golden Spindle" takes place in Saint Petersburg today. The Bolshoi art atelier won the "Art of the theatre costume" nomination for costumes for "Ivan the Terrible" ballet.The costumes and setting were created by famous theatre artist Simon Virsaladze in 1975. The settings have been lost and remade for new edition with sketches. But the costumes stayed safe and have been restored by The Bolshoi art ateliers.

Tchaikovsky. This opera was staged at the Bolshoi only once, in 1990; the production was directed by Boris Pokrovsky, and the premiere cast starred Makvala Kasrashvili. Last Friday the main part was performed by the young singer Anna Smirnova.

 The first premiere of The Bolshoi theatre 239th season will be concert performance of the opera "The Maid of Orleans". This extensive and rare perfoming composition will also become Music Director's and Chief Conductor's Tugan Sokhiev debut in The Bolshoi. According to his words he made this choice because The Bolshoi Theatre's creative life has always been profoundly bonded with the name of Peter Tchaikovsky. Creating this opera was like an investigation for composer, he explored different literary sources thoughtfully and put them together carefully into his own libretto: "Talking about literatury side of question it is difficult to tell how exhausted I am. How many pens I gnaw before putting some lines on paper! "This process of chasing and creating a masterpiece will be exactly shown on the stage by artists and musicians.

Maria Vinogradova (Phrygia), Yekaterina Shipulina (Aegina), Denis Rod'kin (Spartacus) and Alexander Volchkov (Crassus) took part in the "Spartacus"; Anna Nikulina (Giselle) and Ruslan Skvorcov (Albrecht) - in the "Giselle".Yury Grigorovich shares his impression of this tour: "The first time the Bolshoi brought its stagings to Irodium in 1977 - "Spartacus", "Giselle" and "Swan lake". And now, after almost 40 years the Greek can see the "Spartacus" perfomed by Krasnodar Ballet theatre with a new generation of soloists of the Bolshoi. We are not trying to compare, we are trying to continue great traditions. The soloists of the Bolshoi with the conductor Pavel Sorokin had a huge - enormous! - success in this legendary place.  Olga Smirnova, the Bolshoi Ballet's soloist, was awarded the annual Positano Leonide Massine Prize. This Prize was instituted to mark the memory of the Russian choreographer that became very famous in the West and whose brilliant career started at the Bolshoi Theatre in the early 20th century. Olga Smirnova became a laureate in the category "Best dancer of the year on the international stage". The award ceremony and the gala-concert will take place on September 6th. There will be one innovation this year: a new award will appear in the long list of prizes that are awarded in Positano. This new award - Premio Benois-Massine Mosca-Positano - will symbolize the union of the Leonide Massine Prize and the Moscow Prix Benois de la Danse. It will be awarded to Mariko Kida, the Royal Swedish Ballet soloist, who was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow this May. The jury of the Leonide Massine Prize-2014 includes famous critics and journalists: Roger Salas ("El PaГs", Spain), Valentina Bonelli ("Vogue", Italy), Tatiana Kuznetsova ("Kommersant", Russia), Judith Mackrell ("The Guardian", the UK) and Wendy Perron ("Dance Magazine", the USA). Olga Smirnova was born in St. Petersburg. In 2011 she graduated from Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, St. Petersburg (Lyudmila Kovaleva's class) and joined the Ballet Company of the Bolshoi Theater.

 Victor Alekhin passed awayVictor Alekhin devoted to the Bolshoi Theatre 15 years of his life. His career reached a peak in the beginning of 2000s, when he performed several leading parts in productions, choreographed by Grigorovich, Lavrovsky and Balanchine. He danced the part of Drosselmeyer in "The Nutcracker" and Troubadour in "Raymonda". At the same time when his career reached a peak, he suffered a serious illness, sarcoma. In 2006 Victor left the theatre because of his health condition.

 Svetlana Zakharova will organize a charity concert; all funds raised will be donated to the renovation of the Kiev School of Choreography. The concert will take place at the Bolshoi Theatre on December 7th. The event will be organized following the initiative of the ballerina and the Bolshoi Theatre's soloist Yuri Baranov.The idea to organize this concert belongs to Svetlana Zakharova and the Bolshoi Theatre's soloist Yuri Baranov. Zakharova: "I got the idea to help the Kiev School of Choreography right after I had gone to Kiev on tour and visited my native school. As it turned out, nothing had been changed in the building for many years". The ballerina added that the institution needed an urgent reconstruction. The School was built 76 year ago. The concert will star such masters of the world ballet, as Sergei Polunin, Leonid Sarafanov, Denis Matvienko, Alexander Zhembrovskyy, Ivan Putrov, Iana Salenko, Alina Cojocaru, Nina Zmievets and Alexander Ryabko. The artists will present fragments from the famous ballet productions.

The ballet "Don Quixote" was performed at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center open amphitheatre for four times. The Bolshoi Theatre closed its American tour with four guest performances in this picturesque city. Earlier the company made a triumphant appearance at the Lincoln Center Festival. This was the first time that the Bolshoi Theatre performed in the USA after almost ten-year break.

 The Bolshoi Theatre continues its grand tour in New York; guest performances that are taking place are a part of the Lincoln Center Festival. On Tuesday the company excited a furore again. After the triumph of the opera "The Tsar's Bride" the Bolshoi presented its ballet program; the New York audience had a chance to see the ballet "Swan Lake". The cast stared Svetlana Zakharova, the Bolshoi prima ballerina and a People's Artist of Russia, and David Hallberg, the first American principal dancer in the Bolshoi's recent history.

 In honor of Natalia Kasatkina On July 11th Natalia Kasatkina Jubilee Gala took place on the Bolshoi Theatre New Stage. Kasatkina is a famous ballerina and choreographer. The famous ballet "The Rite of Spring", staged by Natalia Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasilyov for the Bolshoi Theatre during the Soviet era was the highlight of the Gala program. This was the first ballet, choreographed to this music piece by I. Stravinsky. Soloists of the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky theatres congratulated Natalia Kasatkina and presented various dance numbers. The program also included fragments from the Classical Ballet Theatre new productions.

This time the Company is to appear at the Lincoln Center Festival, New York. Also taking part in the Festival, which will run from 7 July to 16 August, are: Houston Grand Opera, the Sydney Theatre Company, the Kabuki Heisei Nakamura-za Company, and the Rosas Company, led by the famous contemporary dance soloist and choreographer Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker.The Festival originated in 1996 fired by the ambitious idea of showing New Yorkers something they would never be able to see anywhere else. Hence its unusually broad span in terms of both geography and genre: ranging all the way from concerts of academic music to circus performances, from classical ballet to performance and video art. In addition, the Festival regularly introduces its public to forms of theatre which are somewhat unusual to them - for instance, Vietnam's Water Puppet Theatre, Ta'ziyeh, an indigenous form of music theatre developed in Persia and the Japanese Kabuki theatre.

 Vladimir Shcherbakov was born on July 7th, 1939 in Ashgabat into a working family with many children. In 1968 he graduated from the Saratov State Conservatoire named after L.V. Sobinov (class of F. Gartsman); in 1967 he became the soloist of the Saratov Opera and Ballet Theatre named after N. Chernyshevsky. It was there that he prepared the leading tenor roles: Jose ("Carmen"), Prince Yury ("The Enchantress"), Manrico ("Il Trovatore"), Radames ("Aida"), German ("The Queen of Spades"), Lensky ("Eugene Onegin"), Rodolfo ("La Boheme") and others. The work at this theatre, the desire to understand the complexity and the nuances of the vocal art became the foundation for the artist's future success. In 1975 Vladimir I. Shcherbakov became a soloist of the Leningrad State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after S. Kirov. In 1977 he was invited to be a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre, where he made his debut with the role of The Pretender ("Boris Godunov"), although he had already performed roles of German and Don Carlo at the Bolshoi a year earlier. Later he performed parts of Sadko, Vaudémont ("Iolanta"), Vladimir Igorevich ("Prince Igor"), Sobinin ("Ivan Susanin"), Cavaradossi ("Tosca"), Andrey Khovansky, Riccardo ("Un ballo in maschera"), Sergei ("Katerina Izmailova") and others."Every time that Shcherbakov starts working on a new part, he is very interested in the material and in the image, he thinks about it, sings it many times, connects with the character, gets excited about it, tries, asks for advice, argues and searches. Eventually he finds what he needs. Every time this "beginning" takes a higher level!", - this is what the singer's colleague Yuri Grigoryev wrote about him. His soft, powerful and beautiful voice, which was even throughout the whole timbre, allowed the artist to perform both the lyrical and dramatic repertoire very successfully. His cantilena skills and the ability to sing the top notes created the impression of vocal freedom and ease that the listeners value so much. The artist toured a lot, both in his native country and abroad; he also performed with the companies of the Saint Petersburg Maly Opera Theatre, the Warsaw Grand Theatre and WrocЕ‚aw Opera House. In 1990 he received the title of a People's Artist of RSFSR.

 "Invitation to the Museum" - Marking the 140th anniversary of the ballerina Lyubov A. RoslavlevaLyubov Roslavleva was born in 1874 into a noble family that lived in Yegor'yevsk in Ryazan governorate. She was the daughter of a broke officer of the Lancers regiment and a marshal of the nobility; at the age of 11 she entered the Moscow theatre school and after 7 months of studies she already performed a solo in the ballet "Don Quixote", choreographed by M. Petipa. In 1886 she started studying in the class of Bogdanov; in 1889 she moved to the class of J.Mendes. In 1892 she joined the Bolshoi Theatre and was given several solo parts right away; in 1893 she substituted for Lydia Geiten in the part of Swanhilde in the ballet "Coppélia" by Leo Delibes. In 1895 she was invited to the Mariinsky Theatre to substitute for the famous Mathilde Kshesinskaya in the same part. In 1896 she received the right for an annual benefit performance. Lyubov Roslavleva was married to the Maly Theatre artist Prov Sadovsky Jr.; she often attended drama performances and learned a lot from drama actors - critics notices that the ballerina's pantomime was very dramatic, and her dancing - very expressive. According to the famous stage designer Karl Valts, "she was not particularly beautiful, but there was some particular charm about her image and her dance that conquered everyone". As for her dancing technique, she was not just ahead of Adelina Guiri, but also competed with Pierina Legnani, whom all St. Petersburg ballerinas envied, successfully. She performed the major ballet repertoire in Moscow and performed at the Mariinsky Theatre many times. The list of her parts includes: Claermont and the Star of Venus ("Stars"), The Tsar- Maiden ("The Little Humpbacked Horse"), Medora ("Le Corsaire"), Kitri ("Don Quixote"), Cinderella ("The Crystal Slipper"), etc. She was the first ballerina in Moscow to perform the part of Aurora ("Sleeping Beauty"); illness prevented her from being the first to perform the parts of Odette-Odile ("Swan Lake") and Raymonda. The part of Nikia in "La Bayadere" became her last role. She brought back to life the traditions of Ekaterina Sankovskaya and Praskovya Lebedeva, the great Moscow ballerinas of the past.

 Today, on July 4th, we mark the 115th anniversary of Alexander S. Pirogov, a People's Artist of the USSR.He was born in 1899 in Ryazan into a unique peasant family, where the grandfather, the father and the five sons were gifted with powerful and beautiful voices. The young son Alexander was passionate about singing even in his childhood and suffered from not having the possibility to sing in the church choir; he could not make his dream come true because his boyish voice was not set at that time. He started really singing at the age of 15; he had a very powerful bass voice. His elder brother Grigory, who was a leading soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theatre even before the revolution, had an influence on the singer's further development.

 Today, on June 30th, we mark the 140th anniversary of Vladimir A. Lossky, an Honored Artist of RSFSR.He was born in 1874 in Kiev into the family of a railway engineer. His mother was a pianist, so Vladimir started learning about music from her. When he was in the last years of his studies at the gymnasium, he grew fond of opera and used to watch performances of the Kiev opera almost every day. In 1893 he took private singing lessons with professor Camillo Everardy; in 1897-1899 he studied in his class in the music college. Later Vladimir Lossky mastered his skills in Italy; when he was the Bolshoi Theatre's soloist, he studied in Paris for four months.

 "Invitation to the Museum" - M.I.Glinka - 210th anniversary This year we celebrate the 210th anniversary of Mikhail I. Glinka, a great Russian composer and the father of Russian national classical music. The importance of Glinka's creative work in the history of music can be compared to the impact that Pushkin had on the Russian literature. Both of them were fathers of the mighty artistic movement that is called the Russian classics. Pushkin and Glinka introduced and formulated the cornerstone of the nationality of art. In the dark times of reaction during the rule of Nicholas I. Glinka brought the image of a simple peasant to the opera stage. This image expressed the wisdom of the nation, the beauty, the greatness and the nobleness of its soul. The image of Susanin represents the Russian heroic character, which reveals its greatness during hard times. If there had been no Susanin, the Russian opera would have had neither Tsar Boris, nor Dosifei in "Khovanshchina", nor Prince Igor, nor characters of "The Tale of the Invisible City of Kitezh and Maiden Fevronia", nor Kutuzov in the opera "War and Peace" by S. Prokofiev. This mighty Glinka tradition - the tradition of truth, nationality and patriotism - has been developing in the Russian opera for over a hundred years.

 Irina Bogacheva anniversary gala The Bolshoi Theatre marks the 50th anniversary of a People's Artist of the USSR Irina Bogacheva's creative career. For the past five years the star of the Mariinsky Theatre has been working with the Bolshoi Theatre as well - she is a guest pedagogue of the Young Artists Opera Program. At the concert, which will take place at the Beethoven Hall, the audience will have a chance to hear not only the wonderful participants of the Young Artists Opera Program and those singers, whom she taught in Saint Petersburg, but the legendary opera singer as well. Irina Bogacheva will perform arias from the "main" operas of her life that the audience likes so much.

 The name of Fyodor Fedorosvky, just like the names of M. Petipa, F. Chaliapin, A. Nezhdanova and B. Pokrovskiy, represents a whole epoch in the history of the Bolshoi Theatre. During his lifetime Feodorovsky was really famous, which is unusual for a set designer; however, in recent decades his name has remained familiar only to specialists. His first solo exhibition is organized by the Tretyakov Gallery together with the Bolshoi Theatre Museum and The A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum. Just like the previously organized exhibitions of designers, who worked together with S. Diaghilev - N. Goncharova, K. Korovin and A. Golovin - the project presents an exposition that unveils path-breaking tendencies in the decorative art of the first half of the 20th century.

 "Fyodor Fedorovsky. Legend of the Bolshoi Theatre" - a book is being published in time for the exhibitionThe book was inspired by the idea of the exhibition that will take place at the State Tretyakov Gallery (April 9th - August 3rd 2014). The edition was put together by the Bolshoi Theatre Museum, which provided more than 200 images of the designer's sketches from its collection, and photographs of the productions that Fedorovsky created sets for. The album also has some works from the collections of The A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum, The State Tretyakov Gallery, and St.Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music, as well as some documents from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. There are some articles, describing various periods of Fedorovsky's life, for example, the time when he worked with the Zimin Private Opera, his first decade at the Bolshoi Theatre (1918-1932), which was marked with various pursuits and experiments, and, of course, his most famous productions - "Prince Igor", "Sadko", "Khovanshchina" and "Boris Godunov", the last one still being the part of the Bolshoi repertoire.

Pierre Lacotte is an acknowledged restorer of last centuries' forgotten masterpieces.  On March 21st we mark the 175th anniversary of the great composer Modest P. Mussorgsky, who reformed music art. Feodor I. Chaliapin wrote: "I hope that no one will blame me for patriotic pretension if I say that I consider Mussorgsky to be the greatest genius for the creation of realism in opera. Among those who came before or after him, Mussorgsky had no equal in terms of inspiration and creative genius. Words and sound fuse in his pieces; moreover, this fusion then coalesces with the reality". In our regular column "Invitation to the Museum" we publish rare materials that are housed at the Bolshoi Theatre Museum.The composer was born on the Karaevo estate not far from the city Toropets (Pskov Governorate) into a modest land-owning family. He studied at the Cadet School of Guards in Saint Petersburg. In 1856 he was raised from the ranks and received a commission with the Preobrazhensky Regiment. In the second half of 1850s, influenced by Darzomyzhsky and especially Balakirev, Mussorgsky decided to devote himself to music. In 1858 he resigned his commission and started his music education. In 1863 together with a group of around him the composer organized the "commune", following the model of free comradely living together that was described by N.G. Chernyshevsky in his novel "What is to be Done?" In the second half of 1860s Mussorgsky communicated intensely with his "Mighty Five" colleagues: Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and Cui.
