As the curtain descends on 2009, the Paris National Opera is to pay tribute at the Palais Garnier to Sergei Diaghilev’s ballet Saisons Russes, whose centenary has been celebrated this year throughout the world. From 12 up to and including 3l December there will be 12 performances of a Gala Evening with a concert programme which will include the hallmark ballets of the Diaghilev enterprise. The 16 December Gala, called Hommage aux Ballets Russes, is a special occasion: on this evening, Opera de Paris Ballet Company etoiles will ’keep company’ with Bolshoi Ballet stars.

Alban Berg comes to the Bolshoi. There has been only one Russian production of Wozzeck — this was in 1927 at the Leningrad Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

Maria Alexandrova’s Moscow debut as Nikia on 9 October, will be followed on 10 October by Ruslan Skvortsov’s debut as Solor, while on 11 October, it will be Natalia Osipova’s and Ivan Vasiliev’s turn to make their lst appearance in these two roles in La Bayadere at the Bolshoi.

It was all go at the opening of the Bolshoi’s 234th season: never before had the press conference on the Theatre’s future plans (traditionally attracting a maximum number of journalists), the Company Assembly and the first performance of the new season, all taken place on the same day. And if one bears in mind that at the press conference the Theatre’s new music director was presented and plans were revealed not just for the forthcoming season, but also for the two following seasons there can be no doubt that in the field of ballet, opera and music the Bolshoi today has become a major newsmaker.
