After completing his percussion and piano studies at the Conservatory of Utrecht, Ernst van Tiel committed himself for a long time to the Dutch broadcasting orchestras, which included his co-operation in many recordings in the field of classical- and jazz music. From 1985 onwards Ernst van Tiel studied conducting with amongst others Lucas Vis, Franco Ferrara, Gary Bertini and Jean Fournet.

He started as assistant-conductor to the Netherlands Opera Foundation and was soon invited as a guest conductor to various Dutch orchestras such as the Residence Orchestra The Hague, the Metropole Orchestra, the Gelders Orchestra Arnhem, the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, where he assisted Valery Gergiev in productions such as the fifth Symphony of Beethoven, the Scytische Suite and the fifth Symphony of Prokofiev, Bruckners ninth Symphony (his personal favorite) Shostakovitch fourth, ninth and tenth Symphony, Mendelssohns Fourth Symphony, Symphonie fantastique of Berlioz and Schoenbergs Pelléas et Mélisande.

Next to his activities in Holland he started to conduct abroad. In May 1996 he made his highly acclaimed debut in Italy with the Orchestre del Teatro Comunale in Bologna. In 1998 Ernst van Tiel was asked by Christoph von Dohnбnyi to assist him in a production of Bartуk's Duke Bluebeards Castle with the Orchestre de Paris. In 1999 he made his Finnish debut with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and is appearing since 2000 regularly with the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra. In March 2002 he took over a concert of the Südwestfällische Philharmonic in Germany and was immediately re-invited for 2003 and 2004. He also made his debut in Belgium with the National Orchestra of Belgium, where he now is conducting regularly.
He has been invited to conduct two different programs in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in August 2003 and February 2004. These concerts have been extremely well received by the orchestra and audience and Ernst van Tiel has been immediately re-engaged by the Netherland Philharmonic Orchestra for further concerts in November 2004.

In August 2003 Ernst van Tiel also gave some very successful concerts with the Gelders Orchestra Arnhem.
In December 2004 Ernst van Tiel will make his debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo. Furthermore he has been personally invited by Valery Gergiev to conduct the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, for a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor in November 2004.
Ernst van Tiel likes the challenge of taking over concerts on a short notice- if needed. His orchestral repertoire stretches from the classical period until the latest compositions of our time. Since that time, van Tiel has appeared at the conductor's stand of our theatre each season.
