The Bolshoi Theatre Museum presents exhibits, marking the 200 anniversary of M. Y. Lermontov On September 18 the opening of the large-scale All-Russian exhibition, marking the 200 anniversary of M. Y. Lermontov (1814 - 1841) took place at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition is entitled "My home is always there in the heaven's vault…" and is dedicated to the poet's life and creative work. The Bolshoi Theatre Museum participates in the project as well. The artists of the Bolshoi Opera Company have always performed wonderful romances to Lermontov's lyrics, and will always continue to do so. Most importantly, there are "Lermontov" productions. There is the famous opera "The Demon" by A. Rubinstein and the much less famous opera "Bela" by A. Alexandrov. The opera "The Demon" premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre. Four years later, in 1879, it was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre (conductor - Enrico Modesto Bevignani, director - Alexander Dmitriev, set designer - Karl Valts). The wonderful singer and artist Pavel Khokhlov, who was the Bolshoi's soloist at the time (he also performed at the Mariinsky Theatre, and, by the way, sang the part of Demon there as well), performed the leading part; it was a great success. Critics wrote that he managed to embody the image of "The melancholy Demon, the spirit of exile". In 1904 the opera was staged again (conductor - Ippolit Altani, director - Romuald V asilevsky, ballet masters - Alexei Bogdanov and Alexander Gorsky, the set was designed by several artists, including Konstantin Korovin). This production existed until 1936. The casts starred many outstanding artists. However, it was Chaliapin, whose performance of this part became a milestone; that made this opera famous at the theatres in both capitals. It was planned to create a new production of the opera in 1942, but this idea was never came to life. However, the Bolshoi received wonderful sketches, created by Petr Williams. In 1953 the opera "The Demon" was staged at the Bolshoi's affiliate (nowadays known as the Moscow Operetta) by the conductor M. Zhukov, the director T itsian Sharashidze and the set designer Tamara Starzhenetskaya. Again, the cast starred the Bolshoi's best artists - Alexei Bolshakov as Demon, Natalia Shpiller as T amara, Solomon Khrmonchenko as Sinodal, etc. "Bela" was performed at the Bolshoi only 12 times. The first performance at the Bolshoi's affiliate took place on November 29 1946, the last one - on May 11 1947. The production team looks very impressive: the conductor - a very young Kirill Kondrashin, who had been given the position at the Bolshoi Theatre not long time before, the director - Boris Pokrovsky, who was also very young at the time and had also recently joined the Bolshoi. However, there was one long time luminary - the wonderful theatre designer Vladimir Dmitriev. The Bolshoi Theatre Museum will present 26 exhibits, including Konstantin Korovin's, Petr Williams's and Tamara Starzhenetskaya's sketches for the opera "The Demon" by A. Rubinstein, Vladimir Dmitriev's sketches for the opera "Bela" and the clavier of this opera, signed by the composer Anatoly Alexandrov. The world premiere of the ballet, based on the set of novels "A Hero of Our Time", is scheduled to take place at the Bolshoi next year. Ilya Demutsky was commissioned to write the music; the new production will be created by Yuri Posokhov and Kirill Serebrennikov. The ballet is planned to premiere in June. Photo: Grigory Moisaidis Y uri Grigorovich: "I have entered this place now, after so many years, and immediately touched the walls, the stones that can express so much. The movements of the dancing artist in this eternal set, the music of the orchestra, the breathing of this amphitheatre that can seat five thousand people - all of this really impresses and astonishes; it creates the special effect, when space, time and art come together. W e started the performances late in the evening, when the sun went down, so the stars in the night sky "worked" for us, the moon appeared - it was a full moon - and it looked down at the people, both the Greeks and the Russians, all of those, who filled in this huge amphitheatre and composed "the single world soul". The Krasnodar Ballet Theatre was invited to Greece for the fourth time (earlier the company performed at other venues); the new generation of the Bolshoi Ballet's soloists took part in the guest performances as well. The casts starred Maria V inogradova (Phrygia), Ekaterina Shipulina (Aegina), Denis Rodkin (Spartacus), Alexander Volchkov (Crassus), Anna Nikulina (Giselle) and Ruslan Skvortsov (Albrecht). Pavel Sorokin conducted the orchestra. Each of the artists had their moment of glory, and they will probably remember it for a long time. Notes of eternity in "Spartacus" and "Giselle" became even more prominent.
