The UK/Russia bilateral Year of Culture is taking place in 2014 organized by the British Council together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. It is planned to organize more than 250 events during this Year of Culture.
Marina Kondratieva, a wonderful ballerina and pedagogue and the People's Artist of the USSR, cebrateted her jubilee on February 1st. On February 8th the Bolshoi Theatre dedicated the performance of the ballet "The Sleeping Beauty" to Marina Kondratieva. Almost all major mass media report on the opening show of the Sochi Winter Olympics and many mention the participation of Svetlana Zakharova and dancers from the Bolshoi in the show especially the ballroom scene from War and Peace. Newspapers reporting include New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The European.
The Los Angeles Times writes "And there have been few theatrical moments as beautiful as the whirling dancers in white, their headdresses festooned in electroluminescent streamers, creating an ethereal tableau against a dark background as they danced to Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake." Prima ballerinas Daria Vishneva of St. Petersburg's Mariinsky company ("Swan Lake") and Svetlana Zakharova ("War and Peace") of Moscow's Bolshoi also illuminated the proceedings."
In another article about the opening of the Sochi Winter Olympics the Washington Post offers a quick guide to Russian culture mentioning the importance of the Bolshoi and ballet and opera in Russia.
Many local mass media republish the AFP newswire report titled "A Cultural Guide to the Sochi Opening Ceremony" that gives some history and explains about the ballroom scene from Tolstoy's War and Peace.
Other news: The Daily Mail writes a long profile interview with former Bolshoi Ballet dancer Ivan Vasiliev who will be performing in London in March. The Moscow Times reports about Joy Womack former Bolshoi Ballet dancer joining the Kremlin Ballet.
The New York Times reports that former Bolshoi ballerina Natalie Osipova was injured during a rehearsal and her performance had to be cancelled. She is resting for 48 hours according to doctor's orders.
Novy Ballet" will present its premiere performance at the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre's Small State

On February 11 and 12 The "Novy Ballet" Company will present its premiere - "One-Act Ballets Gala" - at the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre's Small Stage.
The ballet "Preludes", choreographed by Larisa Alexandrova to the music by S. Rachmaninoff, will open the program. The cast stars Maria Tikhonova, Badma Ananduev, Anastasia Nikolaeva, Mikhail Kollegov, Anastasia Cheshun, Pavel Glukhov, Ulyan Tabolich and Ilya Karpel.
The one-act ballet "Reflections…" was choreographed by Alexander Mogilev to the music by the young Moscow composer Vladislav Dubrovin. This is the story of a person who starts seeing in the mirror not only his reflection, but also the most subtle aspects of his soul. An aria, performed by the Bolshoi Theatre soloist Maxim Paster, is also a part of the performance.The festival "Hibla Gerzmava invites…" opened in Moscow
There are two more concerts in the program of the festival "Hibla Gerzmava
Invites…" On March 18 "Messa da Requiem" by G. Verdi will be performed at the Moscow Conservatory Grand Hall. Gerzmava will perform the piece together with the Bolshoi Theatre soloists Elena Manistina and Mikhail Kazakov, and the Mariinsky Theatre soloist Evgeny Akimov. The Tatarstan State Symphony Orchestra and the Yurlov Russian State Academic Choir (artistic director - Gennady Dmitryak) will participate in the performance as well; the orchestra will be conducted by Alexander Sladkovsky.


On April 29 Hibla Gerzmava will perform at the Conservatory Grand Hall again, as she will close the festival with the concert "Viva l'Opera!" Hibla Gerzmava and the Bolshoi Theatre soloist Badri Maisuradze (tenor) will perform arias and scenes from operas by Giuseppe Verdi, Francesco Cilea and Giacomo Puccini together with the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre, conducted by Felix Korobov.
