This year the long-list of drama productions has 99 titles. Why does Svetlana Zakharova need "Ballet without Borders"? On December 7th the gala concert "Ballet without Borders" will take place on the Bolshoi Theatre Historic Stage; Svetlana Zakharova is the artistic director of this project. This will be a charity gala, starring international ballet stars; all money raised will be donated to the Kiev Choreographic School. The name of Svetlana Zakharova has lately been associated not only with Bolshoi Theatre premieres. She initiated and took an active part in several unusual ballet projects; her galas "Svetlana Zakharova and friends", which she invites outstanding dancers to take part in, are a great success abroad. The ballerina's new project is charity. Last year it was the first time during all years of her spectacular career that Zakharova came back to Kiev, where she studied at the Choreographic School for six years and where the teachers prepared her for the international competition "Vaganova-Prix", which later allowed her to enter the graduating class of the Vaganova Academy in Saint Petersburg. Zakharova performed in Kiev and visited her alma-mater. The ballerina said: "When we entered the school auditorium, I realized that nothing had changed there over all those years. Even the smell in the corridors was the same. Later we were told that the school had not been renovated for about thirty years. They only managed to make a new ballet floor in the ballet classes. Everything else - the windows, the walls and the roof - was in a critical condition. Children said it was very cold there in winter, there were drifts and the roof was leaking. I looked at those little kids that surrounded me to take my autograph and thought: they should have good conditions for studying. The current situation in Ukraine is a very complicated one, and no one really cares about the choreographic school. But these are kids!" T ogether with Yuri Baranov, the Bolshoi Theatre's soloist, who used to study at the Kiev Choreographic School at the same time with Zakharova, the ballerina decided to help her native school. Her name guarantees the high level of the project, so many outstanding modern artists who also started their career at the Kiev Choreographic School, agreed to participate in the gala-concert. The gala will star the English National Ballet's prima ballerina Alina Cojocaru and the same company's premier Ivan Putrov, the Mariinsky Theatre's premier Denis Matvienko, the Mikhailovsky Theatre's star Leonid Sarafanov and the Eifman Ballet's star Nina Zmievets. Other dancers that have no Kiev roots decided to join the project as well: Natalia Osipova promised to come from London, Iana Salenko, who grew up in Donetsk, will represent Staatsballett Berlin. The concert will also star Dinu T amazlacaru, Denis Rodkin and other soloists. Svetlana Zakharova will perform in the one-act ballet "Carmen-Suite", which will be presented in the first part of the concert; in the second part of the gala she will perform the piece "Digital Love", which was staged especially for this concert. Patrick de Bana, who used to work with Bejart and Duato, will be her partner; he choreographed this piece, inspired by the tragic circumstances of Malaysia Airlines Boeing disappearance.
