On April 9 the famous bass singer Vladimir Matorin will give a solo concert at the Moscow House of Music Chamber Hall; the program will include ancient Russian romances and songs.
For many Vladimir Matorin are a model and a live illustration of the idea of the "Russian bass".
He is one of the brightest Bolshoi Theatre soloists and a public idol as well; he performs the parts of Boris Godunov, Ivan Susanin and King René better than anyone else in the world.
The singer says: "Russia is called the country of bass singers. Even the opera repertory has more bass parts. You would not find as many main opera parts written for basses anywhere else in the world. Priests also are mostly basses. Who were the Russian romances written for? What about folk songs? There is power, bravery and scale. How can one fail to become part of it? "
Mr. Matorin rarely gives solo concerts in the capital. He gives concerts more often in the provincial cities. Being the founder and the chair of the Foundation for Support of Culture in the Small Towns of Russia, the singer gives many solo and charity concerts in Russian provincial cities, including Zaraisk, Kineshma, Yeln, Vologda and Vladimir.
The program of the coming concert will include Russian songs and romances. Vladimir Matorin will perform famous romances "Shine, Shine, My Star", "Foggy Morning", "Coachman,Do Not Rush The Horses", etc.Vladislav Lantratov and Diana Vishneva. Selected quotes:
- When you were working on the ballet "Chroma" at the Bolshoi Theatre, you could often be seen in the audience at classical performances.
- Yes, I have a lot of respect for classics. /.../
- They say at the Bolshoi Theatre that soon you will come to work on a production and have even met with the new director…
- I was happy to have such a productive time with the Bolshoi Theatre artists when we were working on the production of "Chroma". I hope we will continue our cooperation. We did meet with Mr. Vladimir Urin in London and had a wonderful conversation. But there are no exact dates yet. All I can say is that it will happen in 2015.
- Will you stage "The Rite of Spring" they waited for you to come and work on?
- No, it will be another production. The Bolshoi already has its "Rite of Spring" (in 2013 Mr. McGregor cancelled the production of "The Rite of Spring" to the music by I. Stravinsky at the Bolshoi; however, the ballet premiered on time - the choreographer Tatiana Baganova saved the situation - "Kultura" note).

"Prince Igor" at the Metropolitan Opera

On March 1 a live transmission from the Metropolitan Opera (New York) took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg at 9 p.m.
The project "Theatre Cinema Season 2013-
2014", carried out by the art-union CoolConnections, proudly presents legendary productions at the cinemas. The project also includes transmissions of drama productions from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Royal National Theatre, as well as productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bolshoi Theatre.
This time the audience could enjoy the transmission of the opera "Prince Igor", the epic piece by Alexander Borodin that was performed at the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 1917. Back then the famous opera was
performed in Italian; it was only on March 1, almost a hundred years later, that the American audience has a chance to listen to this opera in its original language. The new production was carried out by a famous Russian director Dmitry Chernyakov, who made his debut at the Met with it.
Gianandrea Noseda conducted the orchestra that performed this piece, which is famous for the "Polovtsian Dances"; the main part of the 12th century Russian prince was performed by Ildar Abdrazakov. The cast also starred Oksana Dyka (Yaroslavna), Anita Rachvelishvili (Konchakovna), Sergei Semishkur (Vladimir), Mikhail Petrenko (Prince of Galich) and Stefan Kocan (Khan Konchak). Many of the singers made their debut at the Met with this production, just like the director himself.
Dmitry Chernyakov: "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" is a literary monument of the Russian Middle Ages. But the opera is an example of the Russian 19th century. Igor in the opera is very much different from Igor in "The Tale". For me Igor is a tragic character. Like a character of the 19th century Russian literature he engages in self-
reflection, suffers and feels bad about what he has done. He also tries to find answers to eternal questions. He wants to gain understanding of the world and the universe and to understand what it is that we live for. As he is looking for these answers, he changes".
The production runs for 4 hours and 30 minutes. In brief
